Stretch Your Gardening Budget with Perennials

If you allow it to be, keeping a garden can be expensive. Planting flowers year after year in your beds can be quite costly. Rather than choosing annuals, many gardeners are turning to perennials to make their gardening dollar stretch farther. When planting perennials, though, you need to do a bit of research as you’ll be looking at the same plants every year.

Here are some great choices for your garden:

Blazing Star

The Blazing Star, or Liatris spicata, is a lovely green plant that is drought tolerant and does well in a variety of soils. With spiky flowers and grass-like foliage, the plant will add interest to your garden.

My personal favorite, coneflowers are available in a range of colors: white, orange, yellow, pink, purple and red. Mixing colors will give your garden a meadow-like feel and staying with one color will allow you to design around a color scheme. You’ll need to deadhead the plants to keep them looking their best but it’s the only maintenance they require.

People either love hostas or hate them; there doesn’t seem to be any in between with these plants. Hostas grow quickly once they take to the ground well and will need to be divided if you don’t want them turning your garden into their kingdom.

Russian Sage

Perovskia atriplicifolia, or Russian Sage, is a beautiful plant that only gets better throughout the season as its blooms continue to open. The flowers of the plant are a lovely blue color and, thanks to their height, look great at the rear of your garden.

These flowers are available in blues, white or purples and don’t look horrible after their blooms have dropped; a major complaint with other irises. The plants do best in moist soil and will crowd quickly, requiring division at least once during the season.

If you’re looking for a pretty ground cover, Tiarella cordifolia is it. The plant does well in shade and will grow around other plants in your garden, lending visual interest and appeal. Purchase them in white or pink or plant a mixture of both colors; you’ll enjoy the plant, in various stages, throughout each season.

Globe Thistle

Found in blue or white, this thistles is the perfect option if you love the plant but not its weedy properties. This is a virtual plant it and forget it addition to your garden; you’ll not need to deadhead it or divide it. In fact, the plant does best when you leave it alone.

Gardening doesn’t have to be expensive and you don’t have to give up your garden simply because you’re on a budget. Planting perennials is the perfect solution for those that want to save a few dollars this Spring.
