Use Trees For Landscape Design And Make It Look Like A Pro

One of the design elements being utilized for landscape design is a tree.  More than just providing a cool shade during the hot summer months, a strategically placed tree can become the element upon which to base the whole design of the garden upon.  Not all trees are the same for there are some differences between each tree which designers and planners like to play with when doing their design.

It is the tree that gives structure to a garden design. It’s height can be the focal point upon which a designer can base upon the position of the plants that he will be using for your garden.  It has lots of other uses aside from the shade it gives.  Depending on the tree, it can set the mood of the garden with the changing of the seasons as its leaves and appearance does change as well.  You know that you have hired a professional landscape design firm when they are able to play with these elements.

Since not all trees are shaped the same way, you can use that element to make your garden look more aesthetically pleasing to the eyes. If you are doing the design of your garden on your own, you must familiarize yourself with the different shapes and samples of each tree so that you would know what kind of tree to use in your backyard.

In colder regions, you would see a lot of pyramid shape trees like evergreens and pine trees.  These trees have wide bottoms and narrow tops much like a triangle or a pyramid.  These kinds of trees are perfect to use in the perimeter of your yard to create a more private space for your family.  However, you would need a really big yard to be able to accommodate several kinds of these trees.  For those who have limited spaces, columnar trees, which have horizontal growth and more even branching patterns, are the best to use. Some samples of these kinds of trees are Columnar Blue Spruce and Paper Bark Maple.  These trees grow tall without using up too much space.

If you have a fairly large space to fill out, your landscape design can utilize globe-shaped trees like the Globe Willow Tree, Eastern Redbud and Royalty Crabapple.  These trees have symmetrical shapes and round canopies. They are nice to look at especially when planted in rows or even by it selves surrounded by smaller plants and flowering shrubs.  Another kind of tree that can be used as a focal point by itself is weeping trees like Royal Frost Birch, Weeping Willow and Weeping Mulberry.

But if you want to provide shade, then the horizontal spreading trees like Beech, White Oak, Sugar Maples and the Elm tree are your best bets for your landscape design. These are ideal shade trees because of their long sturdy horizontal branches.  However, because of its size, it may not be good to place it in a small backyard, as it will dwarf all the other things around it including the house.
