Preparing Your Backyard for Summer

Preparing Your Backyard for Summer photo picture pics imageAs winter begins to come to a close, many homeowners are turning their attention to the coming summer months. This is the best time of year to think about preparing your backyard for summer enjoyment. By now, we are all longing to get outside more, at least when the weather permits; and since there is no rush to get everything accomplished by the weekend, it is the perfect time to begin preparing for backyard landscaping projects. There are some things that can be done this time of year in preparation even if you plan on doing a complete backyard remodeling project later in the year.

One of the first things that can be done to prepare the backyard area for summertime projects and activities is to remove any debris that has collected during the winter months. There may be some sticks, leaves and other debris that needs to be cleaned out, or raked up and discarded. You may also choose to discard any dead plants that remain from last year’s gardening or landscaping projects.

It is a very good idea to inspect various aspects and landscaping elements in the area. Straighten up any ornamental rocks or stones and make any necessary replacements at this time. Check your fencing and other structures to see what types of repairs may need to be made before the heat of summer takes its toll on them once again.

There are many activities that can be carried out to begin your summertime backyard landscaping projects. It is okay to go ahead and lay new mulch in garden areas now. Depending on your geographical location, you may go ahead and begin planting some types of shrubs and trees that will be a part of your summer landscaping design. Now is also the time to begin planting bulbs for the flowers you will want to view and enjoy during the summer months. Make sure that the bulbs are hearty choices and conditions will be conducive to their growth in your region. Preparing to enjoy your backyard landscape in the summer months means starting some plants inside which will be planted outside in the yard as soon as the weather is permitting.

Pruning plants such as roses can be done in preparation for the summer months as well. The general rule is that pruning can be done in months that have an “r” in them. So you will want to have all of your outdoor plants, trees and shrubs pruned by the end of April.

This is also a great time to lay fresh seed for grass. Simply break up the ground by using a rake; then sprinkle the seeds around in the yard. Gently rake across the seeds again to put them evenly in the ground and water the area lightly. Grass seeds will soon sprout and you will have a lovely, green yard to enjoy come summer.
