DIY Landscaping Techniques
Finally, you get the weekend off! As you plan to sit around and laze in your yard the whole day – alas, you realize that relaxation is simply out of the question. Your backyard looks like a mess, and you don’t have enough time or money to let a professional contractor do the work for you. So what are you gonna do?
Contrary to what most people believe, doing your own landscaping is really just fairly easy. All you need are simple tools, scraps, and a little creativity.
- Birdhouses are beautiful. Why not fill a whole bunch of them in your garden, or place them in colorful rows along your fence? You can easily buy ready-made or easy-to-assemble birdhouse sets from your local shop. Or for that shabby chic feel, head to the flea market for vintage finds. Whit-washed wood with chips on the corner make for an excellent Victorian-inspired theme. For the party animals, splash on the birdhouses with acrylic paint in bold colors, and you have a fiesta in your own backyard.
- To add a dramatic flair to you pavement, you can use paint to stain the concrete. Doing so will enhance the look and feel of your backyard, making it more rustic in taste. To start off, use a color guide chart to select your color. You need to test a small amount of paint on the concrete before finishing everything off. If it suits you, color away to your heart’s content!
- What better way to update the look and smell of your garden than to plant herbs? They are cheap, readily available, easy to plant, and can be used for cooking and medicinal purposes as well. Learning the growing requirements of each herb will give you an idea of what suits you and your lifestyle, so ask the local herbalist before making a purchase. These can be left alone in their pots and place near the porch, or replanted as part of your garden. Either way, a little greenery is sure to come a long way.
These are just simple ideas which you can do at home for that spur-of-the-moment situation where you find yourself itching to give an oomph to your yard. Take a look around and draw inspiration from your surroundings. Who knows, your inner artist just might be able to make magic.
