Preserve That Shed

Garden Shed photo picture pics imageBuying a garden shed is always a problem as there are so many different designs and sizes to choose from that it can be quite a difficult task. The best thing to do is to make it a pleasant thing to do, relax, decide what you want and how you will gain your enjoyment with it and find one that fits those requirements.

There is still an old presumption that a good piece of wood will look great one year and will fall apart the next year through wood rot and or woodworm or dry rot or some other wood infestation problem. In fact most of this problem is solved in production and the manufacturers are very proud of the working life of their sheds.

Look For Pressure Treated Timber

It is essential to get a shed or wooden building 100% impregnated with a wood preservative. There are many trade names for the preservatives and Tanlith is one of those, which is very common in its usage in wood preservation.  The way the wood is preserved is simple but very effective and should be applied to all wood used in construction for buildings used outside in the elements.

The wood is first placed in cradles so that each piece is accessible on each side and the cradle is then loaded into a vacuum chamber. The vacuum chamber is then evacuated and the vacuum removes the air from each void within the wood. The chamber is then flooded with the wood preservative, which will then impregnate the wood taking the place of the air within the void in the wood.

To make sure that as much preservative is in the wood as possible a hydraulic ram forces the impregnating fluid into the gaps under pressure so that all the gaps are filled. The hydraulic ram is then withdrawn and the chamber evacuated of any excess fluid, when this is complete the vacuum is released and there is one final push of surface fluid into the wood as air rushes in.

The preservative not only repels water but also includes insect repellents and killers and if done properly will give a very long or indefinite life to the wood. One major point is to make sure that garden sheds you buy or build are 100% impregnated with preservative and then there is no chance of a problem. Sometimes people actually forget that this should also apply to any other items of wood that are included. It is not good to have a shed 100% protected but sitting on a few rough sawn untreated bearer boards.
